As specialists we have undergone more than 12 years of training, postgraduate examinations and experience. Our specialists bring extensive experience in both academic and private anaesthetic practice.
We offer a peri-operative management service that involves us being knowledgeable about a wide range of surgical and medical conditions. We are applied physiologists and pharmacologists with expert knowledge of the derangements that occur during and after your surgery.

Dr Annemie Burke is a specialist anaesthetist in private practice at Durbanville Medical Clinic, with a strong focus on paediatric and neonatal anaesthesia, and a special interest in sedation and anaesthesia for cardiac catheterisation laboratories. She worked for 19 years as a consultant anaesthetist at Tygerberg Hospital, where she was involved in international publications, presented at national and international congresses, and played an active role in the teaching and supervision of junior and senior registrars.
She contributed to a paediatric anaesthesia textbook developed for the African context and was involved in illustrating a children's book designed to help young patients understand anaesthesia (Timba and the Sleep Fairy), reflecting her commitment to compassionate, child-centred care.

After earning her medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Stellenbosch, Dr du Raan completed specialist training in Anaesthesiology at the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In addition to becoming a certified Anaesthesiology Specialist in the Netherlands, she successfully passed the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care examination, earning the title of Diplomate of the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC).
Upon returning to South Africa in 2013, she was employed full-time in the Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery Department at the University of the Western Cape. Working in a setting where patients frequently presented with threatened or compromised airways allowed her to pursue her interest in advanced airway management and further develop specialised expertise in this critical area.
In 2025, she left the public service to join Northern Anaesthetic Practice, where she delivers anaesthesia mainly in the northern suburbs.
Na die voltooiing van haar mediese graad (MBChB) aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch, het Dr du Raan spesialisopleiding in Narkosekunde voltooi by die Akademiese Mediese Sentrum in Amsterdam, Nederland. Benewens haar kwalifikasie as gesertifiseerde Narkosekunde-spesialis in Nederland, het sy die Europese Vereniging vir Narkosekunde en Intensiewe Sorg-eksamen suksesvol geslaag.
Met haar terugkeer na Suid-Afrika in 2013 was sy voltyds in diens by die Departement Kaak- en Mondchirurgie aan die Universiteit van die Wes-Kaap, waar sy haar belangstelling in gevorderde lugwegbestuur kon nastreef.

Dr Megan Jaworska is a Specialist Anaesthesiologist with a passion for providing safe, holistic perioperative care. She completed her undergraduate medical degree at the University of Cape Town in 2004 and obtained her Diploma in Anaesthesia in 2007. She went on to specialise in Anaesthesiology at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, earning her Fellowship of the College of Anaesthesiologists in 2012 and Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2014.
Dr Jaworska served as Head of the Department of Anaesthesia at Karl Bremer Hospital for 11 years, during which she was also a senior lecturer in the Department of Anaesthesiology at Stellenbosch University. She has been actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research, and contributed to the profession through her service with the South African Society of Anaesthesiologists from 2014 to 2018, as well as participation in various committees to strengthen Anaesthetic services in District Hospitals in the Cape Metro.
In 2025, she left the public service to join Northern Anaesthetic Practice, where she delivers anaesthesia mainly in the northern suburbs.

Payment: Medical Accounts Are Changing
From 2004 there is no recommended or fixed tariff for medical services. To comply with the law of the country, there is no medical aid rate or "contracted in" fee, neither is there a "contracted out" or SA Medical Association rate.
This means that doctors would be allowed to charge whatever professional fee they can justify. Every medical scheme, on the other hand, will determine the level of benefits they are prepared to pay.
There is a so called "National Reference Price List" compiled by associates of the Department of Health. This is a reference list only and no doctor or medical aid is under obligation to comply with this.
Patients are responsible for paying their own accounts or at least expect an extra payment over and above the amount that the medical aid may agree to pay.

The effect of anaesthetic drugs is influenced by numerous factors.
